The summary of the book is:
In an alternate 2017, thousands of mysterious floating black towers spontaneously appeared across the globe.
These towers force humanity into an endless series of deadly games that are themed around everything from fairy tales to popular video games. Tang Mo is a shrewd and independent young man who has become one of many unwilling contestants, and he soon meets with fellow contestant Fu Wenduo. They swiftly develop a partnership, and seek to survive in this strange new world.
Review Summary
This volume builds on the momentum of the first, offering an exciting new chapter in Tang Mo’s journey with more elaborate challenges and steadily rising tension. The introduction of the Spire’s first floor adds intrigue, but the mechanics of the initial challenge feel needlessly convoluted, and the pacing there suffers because of it. Once that section passes, however, the narrative returns to form with action, puzzles, and the ever-present danger that makes the world of The Earth Is Online so compelling.
Romance and Main Characters
Tang Mo remains a consistently engaging lead—resourceful, sharp, and easy to root for. Fu Wenduo, who continues to develop as a character, brings a quiet magnetism that nicely complements Tang Mo’s more grounded practicality. The chemistry is undeniable, even if the relationship hasn’t fully formed yet. Trust is still an issue, but there’s momentum in how the two move toward understanding each other.
Secondary Characters
There’s a stronger sense of continuity with recurring characters in this volume, which helps build investment beyond the main duo. Some are becoming regular fixtures, and their presence adds more variety to the world’s dynamics. Still, the series doesn’t shy away from showing how unstable these alliances can be, which means emotional attachment is always a gamble.
Plot
This installment introduces new environments, challenges, and threats while giving Tang Mo the chance to demonstrate growth in his abilities and tactics. The progression feels earned, with increasing complexity in the challenges and subtle shifts in how danger is presented. The game mechanics remain inventive and unpredictable, and the volume does a good job of maintaining suspense through the end.
Worldbuilding
The world continues to expand in inventive and often unsettling ways. From absurd logic to deadly rules, each challenge reinforces how this system isn’t just chaotic—it’s intelligently cruel. The balance between whimsy and horror is as sharp as ever, and this volume particularly shines in making the rules of the game feel like real-world metaphors rather than arbitrary gimmicks.
Writing Style & Translation:
The writing can be clean and effective, especially in moments of introspection or action. However, the first floor’s challenge is awkwardly explained and clunky in execution, to the point that the confusion feels less like a narrative device and more like a structural issue. Some scenes would benefit from tighter clarity or pacing to match the high concepts being introduced.
Spice Level
There’s a flicker of mutual interest and plenty of emotional charge between Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo, but nothing explicitly romantic or physical yet. The tension is rooted more in cautious trust-building than in physical intimacy.
