Can Ci Pin v.1 front

In the distant spacefaring future, humanity has colonized the stars.

Most humans have become completely dependent on the all-powerful artificial intelligence known as EDEN, whose command extends across seven galaxies. Humans who are unable to interface with EDEN live in isolation in the Eighth Galaxy, which is ruled by the tyranny of the strong.

One day, Eighth Galaxy resident Lu Bixing fishes up a mysterious man whom he eventually comes to know as Lin Jingheng, who is on the run and hiding a menagerie of secrets. They quickly become ensnarled in a sprawling drama that will shape humanity for years to come.

Review Summary

The Defectives offers a compelling start to a space opera that balances political intrigue, dystopian themes, and strong character work. While the concept of a rebellion against a controlling AI system isn’t groundbreaking, the emotional depth—especially between the stoic bar owner and the idealistic school principal—gives the story heart. The plot is engaging, but some sci-fi elements are introduced too abruptly, which may confuse new readers. Despite that, its rich cast and layered world make this a promising first volume.

Romance and Main Characters

There’s palpable chemistry between certain characters, especially between the seemingly cold and untouchable ones and their livelier, more emotionally candid counterparts. However, the romantic arc is very much in its infancy in this volume—there are plenty of glances, quiet gestures, and subtle emotional cues, but nothing that fully crosses into romance yet. So while the promise is strong, the rating reflects what’s presently on the page.

Secondary Characters

The supporting cast is diverse and well-drawn, each bringing something unique to the story. A dry-humored AI adds both tension and comic relief; a quiet girl with a deep-seated fear of darkness reveals hidden strength; a chaotic father figure surprises with complexity; and a group of students—each struggling with their own personal limitations—manage to grow in meaningful ways. While not all characters are deeply explored yet, the interactions and personalities feel authentic and engaging, setting a strong foundation for the rest of the series.

Plot

The core premise—a hidden rebellion against a mind-controlling AI network—isn’t new, but this version shines thanks to its colorful characters and pacing. Key storylines include political betrayal, psychological manipulation, cult conspiracies, and character-centric missions. There’s also a fascinating mystery surrounding a general’s identity and past, the origins of the biochips, and a chilling look at how people and AIs can be manipulated en masse. Despite its familiarity, it’s highly engaging and emotionally satisfying.

Worldbuilding

The Defectives presents a galaxy shaped by extremes—gleaming, AI-governed utopias coexist with decaying outer zones plagued by poverty and disorder. The contrast between centralized control and frontier lawlessness is sharp and believable. Sci-fi elements like neural networks, illegal transit tech, and localized factions add texture without overwhelming the story. While the lore is compelling, some concepts could use clearer early explanations. Still, the world feels lived-in, dynamic, and full of untapped depth.

Writing Style & Translation:

The writing delivers strong character voice and snappy dialogue, with plenty of humor and tension. However, explanations of the more technical or political aspects can feel overly simplified or underdeveloped, especially for readers new to sci-fi. Important elements like Eden, the psynet, and political hierarchies are sometimes glossed over too quickly, which can leave newcomers feeling disoriented. The translation captures the tone well but could benefit from some editorial smoothing.

Spice Level

Most of the romantic or emotional connections are still brewing, so this volume remains very light in terms of intimacy.
